He kicked the bucket calmly at his home in Cambridge in the early hours of Wednesday, his family said.
The British researcher was celebrated around the world for his work with dark gaps and relativity, and composed a few prevalent science books including A Brief History of Time.
At 22 years old Prof Hawking was given just a couple of years to live in the wake of being determined to have an uncommon type of engine neurone malady.

The disease left him in a wheelchair and generally unfit to talk with the exception of through a voice synthesizer.
In an announcement his kids, Lucy, Robert and Tim, stated: "We are profoundly disheartened that our cherished father passed away today.
"He was an incredible researcher and an unprecedented man whose work and inheritance will live on for a long time."
They adulated his "fearlessness and constancy" and said his "brightness and silliness" propelled individuals over the world.
"He once stated, 'It would not be quite a bit of a universe on the off chance that it wasn't home to your loved ones.' We will miss him until the end of time."
A book of sympathy has been opened at Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, where Prof Hawking was a kindred.
